Why Hawaiʻi Needs to Keep Its Unique Spirit Alive

Hawaiʻi should focus on its natural beauty and authentic identity instead of chasing outside gimmicks and industries.

Why Hawaiʻi Needs to Keep Its Unique Spirit Alive

♡ Embracing Authenticity

Hawaiʻi, a land of unrivaled beauty with its lush landscapes and vibrant culture, stands at a crossroads. Why do we think we need gimmicks to sell one of the most beautiful places on Earth? This question resonates deeply as we confront the pressure to transform the islands into a spectacle of artificial attractions.

It has been suggested that Hawaiʻi should adopt trends that align more with places of less natural bounty—a gondola, perhaps, or becoming a hub for stadium sports. These ideas overlook what makes Hawaiʻi special. Why can’t we believe that Hawaiʻi is enough? The ancient mountains, the winds that have names, the verdure and wisdom of the forests — that Hawaiʻi is solid.

Solitude in a Crowd

Hawaiʻi’s allure lies in its authenticity. While tourists are being lured with novelty and fabricated experiences, the islands themselves are enough of a marvel. True beauty doesn’t need elaborate shows, and Hawaiʻi should trust in its own appeal rather than succumb to the quest for modernization.

Hawaiʻi doesn’t need outlet malls and chain restaurants, escape rooms or Trader Joe’s. These things are meant for places like Las Vegas where there’s no ocean, and just a lot of sand. We have double rainbows and kalua pig for breakfast - isnʻt that enough?

Lessons from the Past

Ever since the adventurous era of “Hawaii Five-0,” the film industry’s inconsistent embrace has left a trail of fluctuating fortunes. While dreams of cinematic glory hover, the reality of an unpredictable industry proves tricky. Why chase the glamour of Hollywood, especially when even it faces struggles of its own?

According to Honolulu Civil Beat, the entertainment business is not stable enough to sustain a chunk of Hawaiʻi’s economy. Aspirations toward creating a movie Mecca might be enchanting, but this path has often lacked sustained fulfillment.

Embracing Our Roots

Despite an occasional sense of inferiority when compared to major cities, it’s vital that Hawaiʻi remembers its roots. Its essence isn’t captured in adaptation to outside needs, but in cherishing the local community’s uniqueness and vibrancy.

Hawaiʻi could focus on being the best, cleanest, safest, friendliest Hawaiʻi it can be. This doesn’t mean Hawaiʻi can’t have nice things. It doesn’t mean that people here can’t aspire to have great opportunities for their children. But it does mean putting Hawaiʻi first and not being in constant service of fickle tourism trends or the fancies of fashionable travelers.

Envisioning the Future

So, what’s next? More resorts? Space tourism? Hosting the Super Bowl? One can only imagine what new ideas will pop up in the future. But let us envision a future where Hawaiʻi prospers by cherishing its authenticity, pacifying the need to adorn itself with unfamiliar offerings.
