Portland Community College Unveils Cutting-Edge Tech Learning in Hillsboro

Portland Community College (PCC) is paving a new path in education with the launch of its ‘Technology Innovation Spaces’ at the Willow Creek Opportunity Center in Hillsboro. This visionary step is a reflection of PCC’s commitment to not only educate but also empower students with the skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly tech-driven world.

Unveiling the Future: The Teaching Cleanroom

The highlight of PCC’s initiative is its state-of-the-art teaching cleanroom. Spanning 1,152 square feet, this facility is set to transform how students engage with the rapidly evolving semiconductor industry. Supported by a $1.7 million state grant, the cleanroom mimics the environment of semiconductor production facilities, equipping students with real-world skills like gowning and wafer handling. The space is furnished with Lesker Vacuum Training Systems and a Festo Simulated Automated Manufacturing System, positioning PCC at the forefront of microelectronics education.

Opened in January, PCC’s artificial intelligence lab is a hub of exploration and innovation. Offering 1,900 square feet of cutting-edge technology, the lab immerses both students and the community in fields such as robotics, machine learning, and augmented reality. This facility is a testament to PCC’s forward-thinking approach, preparing minds for future technological advancements.

Accelerating Careers: The Manufacturing Lab

Since its inauguration in 2021, the manufacturing lab has been pivotal in PCC’s Quick Start Semiconductor Technician Training program. Designed to fast-track students into the workforce, this program has successfully graduated 421 participants, with a notable majority securing employment immediately post-completion. The lab not only equips students with technical skills but also bridges the gap to fulfilling careers in the semiconductor industry.

Empowering Lives and Transforming Communities

The impact of these educational endeavors stretches beyond individual capabilities. As beautifully expressed by U.S. Senator Janeen Sollman, “PCC isn’t just preparing Oregon’s workforce for today’s opportunities, but also for the opportunities of tomorrow.” Success stories abound, with students like Oscar Rodriguez, who transitioned into a promising career at Jireh Semiconductor. His journey underscores the transformative potential of PCC’s strategic focus on industry-aligned education.

These initiatives are part of a larger movement supported by the Oregon Legislature, aimed at boosting the state’s semiconductor and advanced manufacturing workforce. With strategic investments and collaborations, Portland Community College stands at the forefront, not just adapting to the future but actively shaping it.

According to The Portland Tribune, PCC’s efforts offer a model for educational institutions worldwide, emphasizing the vital integration of technology, industry partnerships, and community focus in today’s educational landscape.
