NASA's Perseverance Rover Records the Sound of a Dust Devil on Mars

The microphone of NASA's Perseverance rover has made the first-ever audio recording of a 'dust devil' on Mars – a short-lived whirlwind loaded with dust and grit that regularly forms on the surface of the Red Planet.

On September 27, 2021, the vortex of at least 118 metres high and 25 metres wide passed directly over the rover as it landed in the Jezero crater.

The sound recording of the Martian dust devil will help scientists understand the weather and climate on Mars.
