MG Motors Revolutionizes EV Market with Semi-Solid Batteries
Offering an impressive 334-mile range, MG Motor's new affordable EVs are set to transform budget automotive technology using semi-solid batteries.

In recent strides towards affordable electric vehicles, MG Motor, a well-established Chinese state-owned auto brand, is ready to unveil cutting-edge battery technology. The MG4 electric hatchback is set to become the world’s first budget EV to incorporate the advanced semi-solid-state battery system, a feature traditionally reserved for high-end vehicles and prototypes.
The Promise of Semi-Solid Batteries
The semi-solid-state batteries supplied by QingTao Energy are a game-changer. With only 5% liquid electrolyte, they significantly enhance the safety and stability of the vehicle’s power source. According to Interesting Engineering, these batteries not only provide better safety measures but also withstand rigorous testing, such as 360-degree puncture tests. Safety concerns that typically accompany traditional batteries, such as overheating and fires, are radically reduced, offering peace of mind for drivers.
Impressive Cold Weather Performance
For those living in colder regions, the semi-solid batteries deliver an added advantage. Tested at a chilling 19.4°F, these batteries retain 13.8% more range than the conventional lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. This improvement ensures that drivers won’t face the usual drop in efficiency during cold months, making snowy commutes less daunting.
Performance and Design
The innovative semi-solid batteries also boost the MG4’s performance stats. With an energy density of 180 Wh/kg, the vehicle’s range extends up to a remarkable 334 miles on a single charge. The MG4 is powered by a 70 kWh battery paired with a 120 kW rear-wheel-drive motor, presenting a dynamic and engaging driving experience for those who savor sporty, responsive handling.
Market Positioning: Aggressive and Advanced
Competing against models like the BYD Dolphin, the MG4 impresses with its larger frame, comfortable space, and competitive pricing. Its measurement of 14.4 feet in length and a 9-foot wheelbase puts it ahead in both size and interior comfort.
Moreover, MG Motor’s collaboration with Oppo introduces the MG×Oppo cockpit system, seamlessly integrating smartphone capabilities into the driving experience. This feature enables voice commands and gesture navigation, creating a cohesive and cutting-edge environment for tech-savvy consumers.
Production and Launch Anticipation
Manufacturing is already underway at SAIC Motor’s advanced Nanjing plant. The automotive world eagerly anticipates the official release of the MG4, promising to bridge the gap between premium electric technology and budget-friendly cars. With an August debut date, MG Motor’s venture into semi-solid battery technology might just redefine the electric vehicle market as we know it.
