In a move that cements India’s soaring space ambitions, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently unveiled the model of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) at the Bharat Mandapam during the National Space Day celebrations in New Delhi. This inaugural step marks the beginning of what promises to be a groundbreaking space journey for India, joining the elite space club with plans to launch the operational module by 2028.

Leap Toward an Independent Space Laboratory

Named BAS-01, the model presented is a significant milestone, representing the core of a future space station uniquely designed by India’s own scientists. Weighing around 10 tonnes, it will orbit at an altitude of 450 kilometers. As India races toward 2028 to commence the primary module’s space journey, plans are underway to expand the station to five modules by 2035. Enabling capabilities like propulsion and ECLSS refills, radiation shielding, and debris protection are set to ensure its viability. The Bharatiya Antariksh Station aims to support crucial operations like extravehicular activities (spacewalks) with advanced suits and airlocks, alongside modular electronics systems for easy upgrades.
