Immerse Yourself in Indigenous Culture at the New Tourism Hub in The Forks
Discover authentic Indigenous experiences at Explore Indigenous, a new cultural hub at The Forks in Manitoba offering tours, artisans, and education.

A Cultural Gateway Opens at The Forks
In the heart of Manitoba, a vibrant cultural gateway has opened at The Forks, inviting visitors and locals alike to explore the rich tapestry of Indigenous tourism. This newly inaugurated space, known as Explore Indigenous, aims to foster connection and understanding with the deep-rooted heritage of the Indigenous communities in the region.
A Collaborative Effort for Cultural Enrichment
Launched by Indigenous Tourism Manitoba (ITM) in partnership with The Forks North Portage Partnership, the center stands as a beacon for Indigenous-led businesses and tourists seeking genuine, meaningful experiences. As stated by the Honourable Nellie Kennedy, Minister of Sport, Culture, Heritage, and Tourism, “This space provides a vital link between Indigenous-led businesses and visitors seeking meaningful, authentic experiences.”
Engaging Experiences Through Education
At Explore Indigenous, participants are invited to partake in self-guided tours and interpretive displays that delve into the stories of Indigenous tourism operators across Manitoba. The showcase highlights Original Original-accredited artisans, connecting visitors to Indigenous-owned businesses through smart technology such as QR codes, and features rotating displays to keep the narrative fresh and dynamic.
Voices of the Community
The endeavor to highlight Indigenous tourism is underpinned by the voices of community leaders like Holly Spence, CEO of Indigenous Tourism Manitoba, who emphasized, “This space is designed to change that. It’s about creating awareness, education, and pride, celebrating authentic Indigenous voices and ensuring visitors can easily explore, learn and connect.”
Interactive and Educational Opportunities
The center also houses Turtle Tours, an Indigenous-owned walking and culinary tour led by Ashley Smith. Here, visitors are welcomed into a narrative of storytelling and food experiences, aimed at fostering a deeper connection to Treaty One territory.
A Step Toward Understanding and Reconciliation
By providing this immersive educational space, Explore Indigenous plays an integral role in promoting reconciliation through Indigenous-led tourism. As Jessica Floresco, Chief Operating Officer of The Forks, notes, “These organizations highlight the powerful stories, teachings, and traditions deeply connected to this land.”
In allowing visitors to experience Indigenous traditions and history firsthand, Explore Indigenous represents a meaningful step toward not just understanding but integrating enduring connections within the fabric of Manitoba’s diverse cultural landscape. According to CHVN Radio, initiatives like these are crucial for advancing cultural appreciation and tourism.
