Exciting Overhaul: Georgetown Visitors Center Undergoes Major Renovations
The Georgetown Visitors Center will close for a 12-18 month renovation aimed at modernizing facilities using a $2.5 million hotel tax fund.
Timing the Change
The Georgetown Visitors Center, a hub for around 40,000 guests annually, is preparing for a significant transformation as it temporarily closes its doors in December. The construction is expected to last between 12 to 18 months. This ambitious $2.5 million project, funded by the city’s hotel occupancy tax fund, aims to not just sprout a facelift but enhance the facility’s functionality for long-term use.
What’s Being Changed?
Renovations will include interior layout updates, a refreshed retail and merchandise display, more restrooms, and vital safety enhancements. Structural repairs are also a key part of the project, ensuring that the center remains accessible and resilient for years to come. According to Community Impact | News, a modernized facility promises improved guest experiences and operational efficiency.
The Need for an Upgrade
In 2019, Georgetown’s tourism strategic plan identified infrastructure concerns within the Visitors Center. Although city officials explored alternatives like moving the office or building a new one, they opted to revamp the existing building, recognizing the potential for cost savings and revitalization. This project is seen as pivotal in avoiding future, costlier issues, according to Downtown and Tourism Director Kim McAuliffe.
Continuing Services
While the renovations are underway, Visitors Center services won’t cease. Instead, they’ll operate from the Downtown Development and Special Events office located within the city-owned parking garage. Here, operations will swiftly transition to maintain the usual level of service, ensuring visitors continue to receive the assistance and guidance they need.
It’s a temporary pause on the center’s historic charm, bringing forth a renewed energy and utility that will soon welcome visitors in a more refreshed and dynamic space. Stay tuned for the grand reopening and experience a facility designed for a brighter future!
