DHL's Strategic Move: Transforming Frankfurt into a Cargo Powerhouse
DHL's new airfreight facility boosts Frankfurt Airport's standing as a crucial hub, integrating sustainability and efficiency.

Centralized Operations for Greater Efficiency
DHL Global Forwarding has taken a significant leap towards optimizing its logistics operations with the opening of a new advanced airfreight warehouse at Frankfurt Airport. This centralized facility consolidates operations previously spread across three different sites, enhancing handling efficiencies and increasing capacity to an impressive 300,000 metric tons per year.
A Modern Infrastructure
Strategically located in CargoCity South, the new 24,500-square-meter facility marks a step forward in positioning Frankfurt as a prominent European airfreight hub. Built by Fraport AG, the facility boasts modern amenities including 54 truck docks, versatile office spaces, and an ample 210 vehicle parking slots, out of which 20 offer EV charging stations.
Commitment to Sustainability
In alignment with global sustainability trends, the facility is equipped with a two-megawatt rooftop solar system that funnels clean energy into the airport’s grid. It is currently pursuing ESG compliance certification and gold status from the German Sustainable Building Council, reflecting DHL’s commitment to environmentally friendly operations.
Strategic Hub Development
“This is a milestone in Frankfurt Airport’s growth as a cargo hub,” stated Anke Giesen, Executive Director at Fraport AG. The announcement aligns with Fraport’s ambitious CargoHub Masterplan aiming at a 50% increase in cargo volumes, targeting approximately 3 million metric tons annually.
A Vision for the Future
Fraport’s CargoHub Masterplan is not just about physical expansion; it emphasizes optimizing space, capacity building, and fostering digitization and process innovation that underpin sustainable growth. According to Travel Wires, this strategic development cements Frankfurt’s future as a pivotal logistics node in Europe.
The expansion of airfreight capacity, combined with a focus on sustainable practices, sets up DHL and Frankfurt Airport for sustained success in the competitive logistics sector. The introduction of such state-of-the-art infrastructure is expected to provide significant impetus to the area’s economic growth while ensuring environmental considerations are not left behind.
