Singapore Aims to Revolutionize MICE Sector with New Downtown Hub

Singapore has set its sights on redefining the meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) industry by creating a groundbreaking hub in its downtown area. This strategic move aims to capture a larger portion of the burgeoning MICE sector, aligning with Singapore’s ambition to significantly bolster tourism receipts by 2040.

Unveiling the Grand Plan

In a recent announcement at the annual Tourism Industry Conference, Grace Fu, Minister in charge of trade relations, articulated the government’s vision to enhance Singapore’s global competitiveness through this new downtown MICE hub. The hub promises to create synergies with existing venues and attractions, ensuring that the city-state remains a premium destination for business events.

According to The Business Times, this ambitious initiative comes in response to the global MICE sector’s projected value doubling in the next decade, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Singapore stands at the threshold of unprecedented opportunity, with MICE visitors typically spending twice as much as leisure tourists, noted Fu.

Building the Future of MICE

Melissa Ow, chief executive of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), emphasized the need to evolve infrastructure for the future. She stated, “While Singapore is in a great position to capture more MICE business, future-proofing our infrastructure is paramount.” The vision is to construct a venue versatile enough to accommodate diverse event formats, including the growing trend of hybrid conferences.

Blending Business with Leisure

Singapore’s new MICE hub will cater to the increasing demand for ‘bleisure’—where business meets leisure travel. As Ong Huey Hong, STB’s assistant chief executive, highlighted, the venue will seamlessly integrate with existing and coming amenities like hotels and lifestyle experiences, enriching the delegate experience.

The hub will be strategically connected to key Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations, ensuring accessibility. It will inject vitality into the business ecosystem, offering local enterprises a steady stream of quality business visitors.

A Hub of Innovation and Opportunity

As part of its comprehensive strategy, the STB is venturing beyond purpose-built spaces to transform leisure and entertainment venues into unconventional MICE locations. Gems like Gardens by the Bay and Jewel Changi Airport are slated to become landmark venues showcasing Singapore’s allure beyond boardroom walls.

Ongoing events at local venues signal a promising future, with notable international conferences and exhibitions already on the calendar. In 2026, Singapore is set to welcome 25,000 visitors to its largest meeting and incentive travel event, the Herbalife Extravaganza.

Partnering for Growth

Ow reiterated that collaboration with local tourism partners is crucial for sustained MICE sector growth. Incentive schemes are in place to support local businesses in pursuing MICE leads and cover marketing expenses, demonstrating the government’s steadfast commitment to fortifying Singapore’s position as a global MICE hub.

The new downtown MICE hub heralds an era of grand gatherings and fruitful exchanges in Singapore, fortifying its stature as a preeminent global stage for business excellence.
