NASA and Axiom Space Unveil a New Spacesuit for Artemis Moon Landing
Axiom Space has presented a prototype of the spacesuit that astronauts will wear during the Artemis III lunar mission.
Previously, NASA has selected Axiom Space as a company to develop and produce a next-generation spacesuit for the upcoming Artemis Lunar Program and future missions to the International Space Station (ISS).
Axiom developed a new spacesuit for "extravehicular mobility" – AxEMU (Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit). The new model provides increased flexibility, better protection against comic conditions, and specialized tools for scientific research.
The presented prototype of the spacesuit was made in Axiom's signature colors: blue, black, and orange. However, the final version will be white to reflect heat and protect the wearer from extreme heat and exposure to solar radiation. The suit will also have a high-resolution camera mounted on the helmet.
NASA astronauts have used the same basic spacesuit design for years, with the technology remaining largely unchanged for 40 years. Although the old suit design has proven itself over that time, it severely limits the astronaut's range of motion.
The Artemis III mission is scheduled to launch in December 2025.
