NASA's Juno Probe Captures New Stunning Views of Jupiter's Volcanic Moon Io
NASA has shared new images of Jupiter's volcanic moon Io taken by its Juno probe from a distance of 35,000 kilometers.
The new images have confirmed the high volcanic activity of Io, with countless volcanoes and lava flows seen on the surface of Jupiter's satellite. NASA estimates that there are hundreds of actively erupting volcanoes over the surface of Io.
Juno took these images on May 16 during its 51st close flyby of the gas giant planet. These images were one of the most detailed images of Io.
The probe was launched in 2011 and entered orbit around Jupiter in 2016. The Juno spacecraft and its mission made discoveries about Jupiter's internal structure, magnetosphere, and magnetic field, as well as found that its atmospheric dynamics are much more complicated than scientists previously thought.
