Chinese Innovation Turns Lunar Soil into Construction Bricks: A Step Towards Moon Colonization

The ingenious device, hailed as the first proof-of-concept for lunar construction, employs solar energy with remarkable efficacy. By using a parabolic reflector, sunlight is concentrated and funneled through a fiber optic bundle, reaching temperatures exceeding 1,300 degrees Celsius. Under such intense heat, lunar regolith melts and is then molded into robust bricks, ideal for constructing roads and structures on the Moon.

Testing Under Diverse Conditions

To ensure versatility, the DSEL team simulated multiple lunar soil types to test the device’s adaptability. Successful trials confirmed the machine’s capability to handle various regolith compositions, preparing it to support China’s ambitious lunar exploration agenda.

Building Tomorrow’s Lunar Infrastructure

As part of its long-term space exploration strategy, China envisions using these lunar bricks to construct research stations and other infrastructures. The International Lunar Research Station, positioned strategically near the Moon’s south pole, will take shape in two phases: an initial outpost by 2035 followed by a more extensive complex in the 2040s.
