Axiom Space and Prada Reveal Futuristic Moon Suit for NASA’s Artemis III Mission
This historic mission will be the first crewed moon landing since 1972, and the AxEMU spacesuit will outfit the first woman and the first person of color to walk on the lunar surface.
Axiom Space and Prada have unveiled the final design of the AxEMU spacesuit, which will be worn by astronauts during NASA's Artemis III mission in 2026. This mission aims to return humans to the lunar surface, landing near the moon’s south pole. The suit, designed for both functionality and style, merges cutting-edge technology with Prada’s expertise in high-performance materials and craftsmanship.
The AxEMU spacesuit features a white, heat-reflective exterior that will protect astronauts from the extreme temperatures on the moon and hazardous lunar dust. It includes advanced life support systems, an onboard diagnostic system, and a regenerable carbon dioxide scrubber, allowing astronauts to perform spacewalks for up to eight hours.
Prada’s contributions to the suit's design ensure durability and comfort, while Axiom Space engineered the suit to withstand the harsh conditions of the lunar south pole. This includes temperatures in permanently shadowed regions, where the suit will keep astronauts safe for at least two hours. Additionally, the suit’s helmet has enhanced visibility, and its boots are designed for optimal insulation and protection against the moon's surface.
